Fion Leung

Time Auction

Fion is among one of many adventurous and creative HKUST graduates who have taken up the challenge to establish their own businesses. But what is unconventional about her is that her business, Time Auction, is all about the "donation of time". She has set up a social enterprise that provides a free online platform for individuals to bid for mentorships volunteered by successful entrepreneurs and professionals, with the prerequisite to complete 15 volunteer hours for any charity.

Set up in April 2014 with two other partners and with investment of just HK$300, Time Auction welcomes anyone of Secondary 5 or above to bid at its auctions. It brings together mentors from different walks of life, ranging from CEOs of various businesses and NGOs to lawyers and artists. The only thing the mentors have in common is that they all love what they do and have made a name for themselves.

Fion is currently working full time with another start-up, Notey, but she manages to run Time Auction in her spare time. She credits her time at HKUST for motivating her to take this challenge. "I actively participated in various programs organized by the HKUST Entrepreneurship Center and learned a great deal from start-up CEOs, including alumni. Through HKUST Connect, I joined the Asia-US Service Learning Program at Stanford University, where I developed a deeper understanding about climate change and social entrepreneurship. I was inspired to become a keen environmentalist and to try my best to give back to society," recalls Fion.
