Michael has been obsessed with developing a tech business to make people's lives easier ever since he was young. In his second year at HKUST, he founded a digital agency, Codaplant Limited, which helps businesses build websites and mobile apps. After graduation, he worked as a full stack coder in a Singapore-based social media company and as a Project Manager at DDB, a 4As global advertisement agency, before continuing to pursue his love for building products. In 2014 he founded Zingly, a B2B platform that allows brands to leverage user-generated content to increase their eCommerce sales. A year later Zingly was acquired by an ASX listed company and Michael was appointed as Head of eCommerce IT, responsible for leading a team of twenty to implement cross-border eCommerce business from the West to China.
Today, Michael is working to solve another problem: helping people to connect more easily and efficiently in real life. His philosophy is that face-to-face conversation is the core of a social activity, and it cannot be replaced by virtual networking. To this end, he and his team created Icebreak, a mobile app that empowers users to discover other users within seeing distance using a breakthrough technology. Currently Icebreak comprises seven staff including Michael, whose role is to raise the company on a vertical level, meet and pitch to investors, and drive joint-venture partnerships with companies from other countries. Icebreak has already passed two rounds of pitching and successfully entered the Hong Kong Science Park Incu-App incubation program in the summer of 2016. The Hong Kong government is now its first investor.
Michael's inspiration for becoming an entrepreneur stems from his excitement about the possibilities of imagination. "By putting imagination into innovation, turning innovation into a business, and deploying the business by building a beautiful product, the whole process is full of joys yet challenging, which I think is the beauty of being an entrepreneur," he explains. One of the key challenges in his role as CEO is how to become a true leader that can inspire others with his beliefs, vision and capability to work hard as a team.
