General Manager (Hong Kong)
After a 10-year career in retail banking at leading international banks and consumer finance companies, Tat made the life-changing decision to give up a stable career to join a young fintech start-up, WeLab, as one of its founding employees.
Fondly referred to as one of the company's "Starting Seven," Tat currently holds the position of General Manager (Hong Kong) where he is responsible for WeLend's business and operations. "It was a tough call to make," says Tat about his choice to leave banking for the start-up world, "but it turned out to be one of my best decisions, and I find it very fulfilling to be able to see how my contributions have helped advance the company's mission and vision. I hope to share my knowledge of fintech with the younger generation and encourage more HKUST students and alumni to join this rapidly growing sector."
Founded in 2013, WeLab has revolutionized traditional financial services by creating seamless mobile lending experiences. Today it is one of Asia's leading fintech companies, operating both Wolaidai (我来贷), one of China's largest mobile lending platforms, and WeLend, Hong Kong's leading online lending platform. Using a proprietary risk management technology, WeLab analyzes mobile big data to make instantaneous credit decisions to serve both individual borrowers and traditional financial institutions.
WeLab recently raised HK $1.2 billion in its Series B financing, making it one of the world's largest-ever Series B fintech fundraisings and the best-funded start-up in Hong Kong. It was also named in a KPMG-sponsored report as one of the top 100 fintech companies in the world – #6 in China and #33 globally.
